They will also give tips on how PhD and research students can use their qualifications and experiences to enter these fields.

PGR Tips is Vitae’s monthly email, which offers tips and advice to help PhD researchers through their doctorate.
In this month’s issue there is some really useful advice on the ability to generate funding which is a real necessity if you aspire to a career in academia. Even outside of academia this ability is highly valued and is often one of the skills that employers may look for.
The advice given by PGR Tips provides information about the following things you will need to consider:
If you are wondering how to find out about funding schemes that could help you with financing travel to conferences, organising meetings and short research visits take a look at the Euraxess website.
This website provides information and advice for international researchers wishing to come to the UK or for those wanting information about research in Europe. The new Euraxess funding search tool is only for funding schemes and cannot provide information for individual fellowships but you can find individual fellowships under the fellowships programme search.
The website ResearchResearch.com has created a portal for all things grants related at www.researchprofessional.com. UCL has it’s own pages within this system and you can easily create your own account to access this resource. If you are new to the site you can watch the video introduction or read the quick start guide and FAQs. ResearchProfessional contains information and news on current funding opportunities from a wide range of sources in the Arts and Social Sciences, Life and Medical Sciences and the BEAMS school.
The Careers in Research Online Survey has been designed to capture the views and experiences of Researchers working in higher education in the UK.
The results will be analysed and used by UCL, national higher education bodies and funders to inform decision making and monitor developments and initiatives relating to researchers’ employment, training and career development.
Please would you be kind enough to complete the survey by 5.30 pm on Monday 31st May 2010 when the survey will close. The survey is all online and will take about 25 minutes.
Rochelle Symons, of RVC Enterprise, gave a very useful overview of internships in the bioscience sector at the LBN Career Track event in March this year. She explained what an internship is and how it can benefit those researchers who are seriously considering a move into industry. Rochelle gave examples of a couple of Internship schemes that have recently been delivered by RVC Enterprise in collaboration with The London BioScience Innovation Centre and helpfully suggested other ways of finding internship opportunities. For more information please read the seminar report: Internships Talk
Useful set of slides and an audio recording of a talk by Dr Jannine Clapp on “What a Postdoc is and what they do” over at the Careers After Biological Sciences Blog maintained by Dr Chris Willmott from the University of Leicester.
Finding someone who has followed the exact career path as you is pretty much impossible, but if you hunt around enough you can find someone who has a similar direction, and may give you some pointers.
