Employer Panel Forums in the Spring 2012 Term

These events are where PhD/research students will have the opportunity to hear from and network with employers who value PhD skills. There are three Forums in the Spring term – each focusing on a  different sector.  A panel of speakers who hold PhDs will showcase various employer perspectives and career paths for candidates. You will have the opportunity to pose questions to the panel during sessions or to individual employers at the end of a session.

Careers in Economics & Financial Services -  Tuesday 31st January 2012

Communicating Science to Business – Training Activities for UCL Researchers

UCL Adva nces invites UCL researchers to attend a programme of FREE training activities that will provide the opportunity to develop skills for effective interaction with businesses and investors.

Communicating Science to Business’ is a three part mini-course. The aim of these worksh ops is to provide UCL researchers with the opportunity to develop skills for effective interaction with business and investors. Participants that complete three sessions in a programme in the same academic year will receive a CPD (Continued Personal Development) certificate to mark their achievements.

PhD Employers Forum – Economics, Banking and Financial Services

This event organised by UCL Careers Service and the Graduate School gives PhD students from numerate backgrounds including those in engineering and the sciences the opportunity to meet potential future employers who specialise in the economics, banking and financial services sectors face to face. You will have the opportunity to find out about options available beyond your PhD and practice some of your networking and interview skills. The day will be of interest not only to students nearing the end of their research, but also to research students at any point in their career wishing to gain an insight into the PhD labour market in sectors including Economic Research, Financial and Professional Services, Consultancy and Investment Banking.

Companies confirmed include: Bank of America Merill Lynch, Barclays Capital, BNP Paribas, Charles River Associates, Credit Suisse Securities Europe Limited, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, FTI Consulting Ltd, KPMG, Morgan Stanley, Oliver Wyman, Operis, Oxera Consulting Limited, Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC), The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, UCL Advances – HELO PRogramme.

This one-day event takes place in two sections:

Information Fair- From 11am until 1pm there will be a table top Information Fair with a selection of exhibitors who regularly recruit PhD students – this will give you the opportunity to find out about a range of employers and discuss with them any opportunities they have on offer.

One to One Sessions – During the Information Fair you will be able to sign up for 15 minute informal one-to-one sessions with employers (with the agreement of you and the employer). These sessions will take place in the afternoon and are intended to allow you the chance to use the skills you have developed during the research student skills development programme in a one-to-one situation.

PhD Employer-led Workshop – Networking with Bank of America, Merrill Lynch

The ability to network productively is a key skill in academic and industry settings. This session will help you to understand what effective networking involves and will enable you to identify and make the most of networking situations. You will have the opportunity to practice some techniques within the workshop.

An audience of post-docs and DPhil/PhD students and others from the biomedical sciences departments within and around Oxford and from other Universities, to meet with a number of medical writing and communications professionals for a highly engaging session which presents medical writing as an attractive career option.

Want to network with life science and healthcare professionals?

There has been a recent merger between two life science networking organisations: The Cambridge – based ERBI and the London Biotechnology Network, creating ‘One Nucleus’.  In their own words, the new network contains;

pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device and diagnostic companies and associated technical and commercial service providers.

One Nucleus runs specific networking events for its members to foster cross-collaboration between commerical organisations and between the commerical sector and universities. Member services include seminars and workshops on hot industry topics and training events, such as a their ‘Introduction to drug development’ workshops in December. If you are interested in collaborative work with the commercial sector, or wish to pursue a non-academic research career, then OneNucleus is a good place to start.

LBN Career Track presents: “Careers in Life Sciences: Bench & Business”
